Punjabi Bride Maiyaan | Manteca, CA
We did Rasnoor’s engagement photos back in 2024, and we were truly thrilled when she chose to book us for her wedding festivities. The celebration lasted a week in the Central Valley, with everyone staying in Manteca for the pre-wedding events, and this blog captures the bride’s Maiyan. The Punjabi Maiyan (also called Mayian or Vatna) A joyful pre-wedding ritual, usually held a day or two before the wedding at both the bride’s and groom’s homes. Family and friends apply a paste of turmeric, flour, and mustard oil (vatna) to the skin, aiming to create a natural bridal glow while signifying purification, blessings, and the community’s loving support. We captured some portraits of Rasnoor and a few quick family photos before the bride’s relatives led a lively procession with dancing and singing; they even added colorful smoke bombs that heightened the celebratory atmosphere. Mustard oil by the door tradition by mom: the Punjabi ritual of pouring oil by the entrance (often mustard oil), known as Tel Chhidakna, is an auspicious practice commonly performed during weddings or when welcoming guests. The groom’s mother or female relatives pour oil on the entrance gates, symbolizing a smooth, trouble-free start to new beginnings, protection from evil, and a warm welcome into the home. After family and friends applied vatna to the bride, that marked the joyful close of the maiyan celebration. Sit back and enjoy the slideshow.
